Day Five: A Barrage of Welcome

Udjote! (that's my probably-wrong, phonetic spelling of "Good Afternoon!" in Gulmanche)

Ok!  The battery's about to die and we don't have power, so I've got to keep this quick.

This morning we took our leave of Joey and his spacious abode and--with gendarme (the military) helping block the route for our departure--headed off.  We picked up new PCV Sara Thompson, but lost Kirstin and Carolyn.

Our trip today was all on dirt road, through beautiful fields all the way (it's just about harvest time here, so think "amber waves of grain").  We biked 78.9 km, for a current total of 388.8 km.  Our fastest speed was 37 kph and the average was 22.6 kph.  It took us 3.5 hours to finish.

We got to Kim Hover's site around 10 AM, but had a bit of trouble getting TO Kim's site.  You see, there is a mammoth dam on the road.  Our driver was very concerned about us crossing, and in the end they made us walk while they carried our bikes.  It was gorgeous.

About 100 people were on the other side of the dam to welcome us, and led us to Kim's house on their bikes.  Afterwards, we went to a community center where the mayor made a speech, Marita made a speech, we gave out the certificates, and had a huge meal.  It was a HUGE welcome, and I'm sure a testament to how much Kim's community is behind Peace Corps.

It's pouring rain now, so we're all stuck inside, instead of visiting the chief, as we had planned.  That'll make it fun at the dam tomorrow! :)
