Day 23 Gallo to Waga (Ouagadougou)

90 km

We left on time this morning…sort of…only 15 minutes late. It was 5:15 and the clouds were already approaching. Rain had not obstructed our route yet, but on the last day we understood that while we were lucky, we weren’t THAT lucky. 45 minutes after setting out for the day, the rain came in the form of a gentle drizzle before turning into a heavy shower near Ipelce just before 7:00. Fortunately, there were still omelette sandwiches and hot instant coffee on what became quite a chilly morning.

After biking 80 km before 10:00, we passed around high-5’s and were eventually greeted by 3 officers who would become our police escort into the Maison du Peuple of the capital city. As we set off for the Maison du Peuple, site of the swear-in for the newest volunteers and the 50th Anniversary Fair, we were the center of attention, passing through every red light in Ouaga. Upon our arrival, we greeted the newest volunteers, PC staff, the US Ambassador and the Burkina Faso Prime Minister in a beautiful photo-op. I hope we made the papers.

Around 2 pm, we divided into our “strike force” teams for preparing delicious bacon, cheese, avocado, mushroom BURGERS. And these were not the typical doesn’t-fit-the-bun-Burkina-Faso burgers. These were heart-attack-giving-but-delicious-anyway burgers. Well worth it. And a special recognition goes to the fruit salad and Israeli salad, which made us feel less indulgent than if we’d ordered French fries.
