Sabce to Kaya (72.5 km)

By Bridget Roby

After packing up our bug huts in the dark, we headed out of the village and biked the 12 km to Kongoussi for breakfast. We found a nice omelet place thanks to the gendarmes (regional security officers) who insisted on escorting us, and filled our bellies before the approximately 60 km to our destination.

The omelets were slightly bland at first, but then Chris’s eagle eye spotted a basil tree growing in a nearby garden, and with the addition of a few freshly picked leaves – voila! We had tasty omelets! The rest of the ride was pretty uneventful – which is a good thing, don’t get me wrong.

Dirt roads, not too much wind, and no injuries or major bike problems. When we arrived in Kaya we met up with the volunteers there for a filling lunch of potatoes and rice and chicken, and then went to relax for the rest of the day at their houses. And since they both have electricity and running water, it was a great place to have a relaxing night!
